About the product 🥃
Stauning R.Y.E. is the whisky that started it all for Stauning: the first expression the distillery sent to market, and still its signature malt. It’s made from 100% locally grown, floor-malted Danish rye and barley, double distilled in small copper pot stills heated over direct fire, then matured for 3-4 years in new American oak casks. It’s unfiltered, so a little sediment may appear. 48% vol, 70cl.
Tasting notes 👃
Freshly baked rye bread on the nose. The palate brings gentle dried fruit and ripe cherry, balanced by vanilla and citrus peel. The finish turns peppery and spicy, then settles into a sweet note of exotic fruit. Soft and full-bodied with a robust, distinctive character, reflecting more than 2,000 years of rye growing on Denmark’s west coast. Notes of chocolate, caramel and toasted nuts come from the direct-fire distillation.
About Stauning 🐾
Stauning is a Danish distillery in Skjern, on Denmark’s west coast, and it malts its own grain on the distillery floor. The direct flame reaches temperatures of up to 650°C. At that heat the solids in the liquid cling to the copper and trigger a Maillard reaction, the same browning that caramelises a steak, which builds Stauning’s deep, toasty flavour. Everything is handmade on site from pure local ingredients, and R.Y.E. has collected international medals including SIP Double Gold, IWSC Gold, Ascot Double Platinum and SFWSC Gold.
