A passion through generations.
Amaro Lucano was born in 1894 in Pisticci, a small hilltop town in Basilicata — the rugged, herb-rich region of southern Italy once known as Lucania. It was there that Cavalier Pasquale Vena, a confectioner with a passion for herbology, began experimenting in the back of his biscuit factory, combining more than 30 wild herbs — artemisia, gentian, clary sage, bitter orange, angelica, and ruta among them — into a secret digestive liqueur that would outlast him by over a century.
Word traveled fast. Within years, Amaro Lucano had reached the table of the Royal House of Savoy, becoming their preferred bitters. From that royal endorsement, the Vena family — now across four generations — built a true Italian institution. Brothers Giuseppe and Leonardo industrialized production in the mid-20th century and poured boldly into national advertising, giving birth to one of Italy's most beloved taglines: "What else do you want from life? A Lucano!"
Today the brand is headquartered in Pisticci Scalo (Matera), its bottles still holding the same closely guarded recipe — an extract aged for five months before blending with pure alcohol, essential oils, water, sugar, and caramel. The Lucano Group has expanded into vermouth, gin, and limoncello, but Amaro Lucano remains the heart of it all: a deeply territorial, family-owned Italian amaro with global reach from New York to Shanghai, and a heritage recognized as a marchio storico — a protected historic brand of Italy.
